I am stepping outside my regularly blogging style today and posting an article on something that comes close to my heart.
Animals.
Not just animals in general but abused, mistreated and disregarded animals.
I have always had pets since I was a young child.
Cats, dogs, snakes, fish, horses, you name it.
Right now I have three dogs and four cats.
My most recent adoption is an un-neutered male cat we have named Nublet.
Nublet
We saved him from a terrible snow storm and brought him into our home.
Nublet goes in on Monday for his well cat check up and to be neutered.
Originally I had planned to let him back out after being neutered as he loves the outdoors and I thought perhaps, just perhaps he had a home elsewhere although efforts to find an owner were fruitless. He is far from a feral cat as he is so loving.
One day as soon as the weather was better we did allow him to go outside and he disappeared for the entire day. I was relieved and thought perhaps he had went back home. He showed up later that evening and was lying on our porch meowing and bloody. Something had gotten ahold of him and he was in pain. Of course we immediately brought him in and took care of him and he recovered in two days. His injuries did not require a visit to the vet but I found it interesting that he would return to us as animals will go to where they feel most safe. This was proof positive that he either did not have a home or if he did he did not feel safe there.
Thus now he is our fourth cat and will have to learn to love living inside.
Lucky for Nublet and our other cats we have a cat house they can enter from our office window to enjoy the outdoors in a safe manner.
We seem to have in our neighborhood a big problem with stray cats. You can tell these cats are uncared for quite easily. Now I realize once you feed a cat it will keep coming back to you but I cannot allow an animal to freeze and starve. This prompted our Hobo Kitty City to develop. Its nothing fancy but we have cat cubbies, boxes, blankets, food and water organized on our patio and in the yard for the more timid cats so they have food and shelter in the winter. Some of these cats are no more than kittens yet already pregnant. I am sure Nublet was a contributing factor to this epidemic prior to bringing him into our home.
A small part of "Kitty City"
This is where "itty bitty" the pregnant Siamese kitten lives.
It’s cold outside - very cold, below freezing, these cats are tossed aside by irresponsible pet “owners”. They are viewed as objects and not living beings! They are skinny, have worms, cuts from fighting, colds, and need a lot of TLC not to mention medical attention!
Of course we do what we can but it can become quite overwhelming. We do have a no kill cat shelter in our area which I recently found however the waiting list to get a cat taken in by them is very long. Currently we are taking care of, the best we can, a kitten who is pregnant with her first litter. She has worms, she has a cut ear, and she needs help! My options at this time are to watch her freeze outside even with our blankets we warm up for her and her kitty condo or to take her into the Humane Shelter which by the way is NOT a no kill shelter. I do know they will NOT put her down right away because she is pregnant and kittens do get adopted faster than grown cats, she being tiny herself and a Siamese will also most likely get adopted... most likely.
Truth is we simply cannot afford to continue to take every stray in our neighborhood to the vet. Its just not possible especially when you consider each one needs spayed or neutered!
I feel so terrible for these cats, especially the ones sitting on our patio at night. I have literally closed the blinds so they cannot see in - see our INSIDE pets warm and being loved. It breaks my heart!!!
My husband and I do go out and love them, warm them up, check their food and water to be sure the water is not frozen, but there is only so much we can do.
Responsible pet ownership is hard work! Its expensive! It takes time and energy and you need to pay attention to your animals!
The “owner” of the pregnant Siamese female kitten also had another one - a male who looked just like her - he has since disappeared completely. My neighbor - also an animal lover said she saw him - he was injured and she tried to catch him to help him but could not. She told the “owner” of this animal about the injury and asked if she had seen him. The “owner” simply shrugged as if hearing about her injured and yes, bloody pet meant absolutely nothing to her. Its a shame, a sad sad shame.
Our other neighbor has two small dogs, I am not sure of their breed as we do not go over onto their property however these tiny dogs are kept outside ALL winter long. They bark and cry for attention yet you will NEVER see these dogs get ANY human contact!
These dogs do have some hay tossed in now and then and when watered and fed they are not loved, giving any positive attention and the “owners” do not even pat them on the head or talk to them. They dump the water and food and leave. It makes me sick.
We have called the shelter, the city, the sheriff, every number we can think of but nothing can be done as long as they are fed, and do not appear to have been “abused” PHYSICAL abuse. What IS abuse anyway? Why OWN an animal only to shove it aside and ignore it?
Perhaps this is a venting article but if ANYONE reads this and learns ANYTHING from it I feel I have made one more step toward educating pet owners!
Get your pets spayed and neutered!!!
DO NOT declaw your cats! Don’t like your furniture torn up - don’t get a cat! There is always a chance your cat could get out and their claws are for survival!
Register your pets with the city.
Get your pets checked up on a regular basis for heart worm and other common diseases.
Tagging your pets - this is a subject I am still investigating but at this time I am all for it - the pros seem to outweigh the cons!
LOVE your pets!
Keep them WARM!
Keep them FED!
Keep them WATERED!
If you no longer want or can care for a pet take it to a shelter - DO NOT simply dump it or leave it outside to fend for itself!
Admit if you cannot afford proper care for your pet! Once you have bonded with an animal I understand you cannot imagine life without them but if you can not properly care for them please find someone who can - THE PET deserves it!
DO NOT hoard animals! Most animal hoarders truly feel ONLY they can love the pets they have and honestly you are NOT loving your pet if they are living in their own feces!
This is not a problem in just SOME neighborhoods! This problem is widespread and can be found in the richest and poorest of neighborhoods! It’s everywhere!
Use common sense! Come on people we are supposedly the top of the “food chain” here supposedly the most intelligent of living beings. Time and again I find proof positive we are total idiots!
